Romanticise your life with Poetcore dressing
Hello friends! I think it’s official! Autumn is coming and I couldn’t be more excited for endless cups of tea, pumpkin patches, movie nights, trench coats, cosy jumpers and cardigans. It’s time to put away the summer dresses and lean into cosy season. In my opinion, there’s nothing cosier than a comfortable chair, a good book and a hot beverage. So let’s do the job properly and dress the part; after all it’s chic, effortless and oh-so stylish. Ladies, this season is all about Poetcore and I’m going to guess you have most of the components into your wardrobe already and if there’s anything you need a top-up of, Very.co.uk have got your back. They literally have all the cutest pieces, which are perfect for mixing and matching with your existing wardrobe. I know every single piece I’m wearing will be worn over and over for many season to come!
Also, as an avid reader and book club member, I’m going to share some recommendations and I hope you’ll give me some in return! Let’s go!

What is Poetcore style
When I think of poetcore style, I think of a cosy bookshop in a movie and what the characters would be wearing; earthy tones, lots of layers, loafers, glasses, artsy accessories, floaty skirts, witchy boots, cosy knitwear and an air of academia. Plus the handbag should always be big enough to fit either a book or newspaper inside. Bonus points if they are poking out! It’s a look which mixes old and new and gives a nod to twee-core and the 90’s. If you are like me and you love rummaging the womens jumpers catagory, then this look is for you!

Layer up!
The first rule of poetcore is layers; it’s an autumn / winter look, so you want to have plenty of layers which as the months get colder, you can add more layers too. Don’t be afraid to pair a collared shirt with a cardigan, or tie a neckerchief over your jumper or have your cuffs poking out of your jumper sleeve. The layers add cuteness and interest, as do the odd little bow or frill. As the months get colder, you can add a chunky scarf, bobble hat and slightly warmer coat. If there’s not a giant mound of clothes on your bedroom chair at the end of the day, take it as your sign up add more to your outfit!
Mix prints and textures
Poetcore style is a very earthy colour palette; lots of rich browns, camels and maybe the odd hint of white, cream, orange or forest green, so don’t be afraid to mix prints and textures to add interest. For instance a pinstripe trouser with a checked shirt and chunky tank top. Or a floaty silk skirt with smart loafers and a structured satchel. If your shirt has some creases, that’s fine and if your jumper has a few bobbles, just go with it!

Practical & chic
One of the things I love the most about Poetcore style is that it’s super chic, as well as being practical and comfortable. For example, the jumpers are soft and cosy, the skirts and trousers are a relaxed fit, and even the shoes are perfect for walking around in and will keep your feet warm and dry even on wet days (God bless Dr Martens for those chunky soles and reinforced leather). The bags are generally oversized too, which is perfect for carrying around a book, reusable coffee cup and extra layers, should you need them! As for accessories, I’m of the opinion that you can never go wrong with a leather tote bag or a satchel, and jewellery which looks like you found it at a vintage market or charity shop – which is where I got my jewellery!
Now there’s only one thing left to do… have a cup of tea and read a book. The choice is yours; will you be opting for the sofa or will you be heading to a book shop cafe?

Recommended reading
As promised, here are some books I read recently think you might enjoy too!
The Make Believe by Hannah Murray – You might know Hannah as Cassie from Skins, but if you fast forward a decade or two, you will find her living in London and accidentally joining a cult. This is the story of her trying to find peace and instead finding herself joining a cult and having a mental breakdown. It’s beautifully written and a fantastic read.
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman – How could I not include this iconic autumnal book? Plus it’s perfect to read before you watch Practical Magic 2
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis – I was recommended The Dollhouse and loved it so much I found myself reading more of her books. Most of them take place in one building in two timelines and The Masterpiece is my favourite of hers, so far!
Own it by Iona Bain – Next up! This is a little bit different, but I would say it’s a book everyone can benefit from reading. It’s a finance book for Gen Z and Millennials and it’s got everything covered from Pensions to savings and a big ol’ section about investing too. Because how can we retire in the lap of luxury without taking our bank balances seriously?!
Famesick by Lena Dunham – There’s a reason this book was all over the instagram algorithms, it’s fantastic. It covers her health issues, her rise to fame as the writer and star of Girls and everything in between. I’ll never do it enough Justice, so you’ll just have to read it for yourself!
You Had to be There by Jodie Harsh – I read this on a complete whim and LOVED it! It takes place over a 10 year span and it’s all about London nightlife. It’s beautifully written, wonderfully nostalgic and the perfect book about clubbing in the Y2K era of London. I’m so grateful Jodie Harsh wrote it as I feel like it captures SO much of the era which might otherwise be forgotten.
