Jo Malone ‘Melancholy Thistle’ review
Hello friends! Today I thought it would be fun to do a review of the new Jo Malone perfume; Melancholy Thistle. This is from the new Highlands collection which is a limited edition collection. The fragrance is limited edition and only comes as a 30ml bottle. It has a beautiful painterly style limited edition bottle and if you want one, you should snap it up fast, before it sells out.
‘Bold and bright Melancholy Thistles guard a long-abandoned castle in the Scottish Highlands. Entwined with a green freshness, this woody aromatic scent is underpinned by coolwood to summon the ivy-covered stone walls inside a majestic relic.’
What does Jo Malone Melancholy Thistle smell like?
Thistle, ivy, coolwood
Jo Malone ‘Melancholy Thistle’ review
Every year Jo Malone London blow us away with their Sping / Summer Brit collections and this years is no exception. Their 2023 summer collection is inspired by the Scottish highlands
To my nose, the dominant notes are dark green accords and a cool, woodsy aquatic note. There’s a hit of a floral, which reminds me of lilac or violet and there’s perhaps a mossy, driftwood note too.
If I had to categorise Jo Malone Melancholy Thistle, I would class it as unisex to masculine. I think for me, the coolwood accord takes it to a slightly more ‘mens’ territory, however, it is possible the coolwood was more dominant on my skin than others. As with all Jo Malone fragrances, it could also be combined with other colognes to give it a slightly more feminine twist, for instance; it could be lovely with a little Red Roses or Blackberry & Bay.
In terms of fragrances it reminds me of, there’s a definite similarity to Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Seasalt, as well as Cypress & Grapevine. It also reminds me a lot of Forest Moss from the Wild Swimming collection which has a lot of the aquatic green accords.
Fragrance Combining
If you want to fragrance combine this cologne, I would recommend pairing it with Wood Sage & Seasalt to make it a slightly more salty and complex version of what it already is. It could also be lovely with Grapefruit, although, I would say this might be a more masculine combination.
Personally, I would love this with something a little richer, like Myrrh & Tonka, to make it a little more rich a creamy, or Dark Amber & Gingerlily to make it a little more luxe and fabulous. Similarly it would be a lovely day time perfume with Blackberry & Bay to give it a little more juiciness. It would still have it’s wild feel, but a little more delicious!
For the foreseeable future, Jo Malone Melancholy Thistle is a limited edition fragrance, however, I’m personally hoping it will be introduced into the classic collection at some point. It’s a stunning green, fresh, woody fragrance with beautiful rural accords. I loved Forest Moss and I love this one too, plus there’s not enough ‘men’s’ fragrances in the Jo Malone collection and I think this is a stunning addition to sit alongside the iconic Wood Sage & Seasalt. What do you think?
