Can you wallpaper a bathroom?! The tips & tricks you need to know!

Hello friends! Today I want to chat about bathrooms and wallpapers and discuss if you can wallpaper a bathroom – spoiler alert – you can! And I want to give you all the tips and tricks on both hanging it and keeping it fresh! Are you ready?!

Keep Your Bathroom Well Ventilated

Whilst you might not want to shower with the window open in the dead of winter, it is important to keep the bathroom well ventilated. Use the extractor fan, keep it clean and functioning AND once you are warm and dry, try opening the bathroom door and windows to really get that air circulating and keep the wallpaper from getting damp and ruined over time. It really helps to protect the paper, as well as helping to keep the paper stuck fast to the plaster.

Avoid Applying Wallpaper To Splash Zones

In the same way that a steamy damp room will compromise your dream wallpaper, it’s also important to avoid applying to splash zones. You might want to paint some sections of the bathroom and wallpaper others. Or you might want to tile a little further around the wet areas than you might naturally plan to. But either way, avoid wallpapering parts of the room which might get splashy!

Avoid Wallpapering The Ceiling

OK, so I am guilty of this one, but I will say this.. it was part of a first fix, not the permanent bathroom. But that’s a story for another day! Anyway, avoid wallpapering the ceiling as this will eff up the wallpaper quicker than you can say ‘rub-a-dub-dub!’. If you HAVE to wallpaper the ceiling, try to do it in a bathroom which gets less use, like a bathroom which has just a bath and no shower and high ceilings if possible. Although it might be better to stick to painting the ceiling and wallpapering the bedroom and cloakroom ceilings instead!

Protect The Walls With Decorators Varnish

Did you know that you can protect your wallpaper with decorators varnish? It’s a clear acrylic varnish which helps to seal your wallpaper and protect it. It can work wonders on high traffic areas, as well as bathrooms and kitchens. The only thing I would say though, is if you live in an old house with lime plaster which needs to breathe, you might want to consult a specialist to make sure it’s suitable for your home!

Consider Peel & Stick Wallpapers

Peel & stick wallpapers and vinyl wallpaper in general is brilliant for bathrooms thanks to it’s slightly shinier finish.
