Mulberry Lily Review

The Mulberry Lily has always been one of my favourite Mulberry handbags. I love it’s classic flap style, the beautiful brass hardware and the fact it can be worn two ways, as a shorter shoulder bag with the double strap or as a cross body or long shoulder bag. I also really love the fact that the chain doesn’t sit against the leather at the top of the bag as I’m always super wary of bags which do this, as heavy chains can sit against softer grains and cause them damage. The Mulberry Lily bag is a wonderfully classic flap bag made of the signature Mulberry heavy grain thick leather.

I personally prefer the classic lily or the Medium size Lily, I think they are both dreamy, it really depends on what size works best for your lifestyle and your body shape and size. There was a time where Mulberry made a Mini Lily, which was super cute but extremely impractical. You could barely fit more than a credit card and lipstick inside, but it was adorable. However this size has now been discontined and instead they have released an oversized lily, which is stunning, however does not come in grained leather, just cord, nylon and suede. I’m personally hoping this will eventually come out in a heavy grain leather, but I don’t know if they decided against it because it was simply too heavy for every day. Why do I say this?! Because one of the main disadvantages of the Mulberry lily bag is the fact that it is a heavy bag, especially in the medium size.

Between the thick heavy chain, thick heavy leather and the brass hardware, it does get heavy. Plus chain straps tend to be less comfortable on the shoulder as they dig in more – especially in the warmer months. They tend to be better for the winter months as thick coats and jackets give you a little padding and cushioning making the bag more comfortable and generally make you feel the weight less. So I would bare that in mind if you are thinking about it. Personally I would suggest switching out your classic Mulberry big heavy wallet for something smaller and lighter like a card holder, which will help keep the weight down.

The new Top Handle Lily bags are super cute and a little dressier for the evening, however, I personally still prefer the classic Mulberry Lily, Personally I would only consider a top handle lily if I found one on sale OR if it came in a colour I couldn’t resist which the classic Lily doesn’t come in – but that’s just my personal opinion!!

Finally, I just want to finish my Mulberry Lily Review with a quick word on the leather quality. The heavy grain leather is super durable and beautiful. If you polish it once or twice a year with a leather cleaner it should also help it soften up and age beautifully too. The Mulberry Lily is a classic silhouette from Mulberry and the type of bag that doesn’t really date or age badly. It just keeps going…. It’s a beauty! What do you think of the Mulberry Lily?
