House Renovation Update!!

House Renovation Update!!

Hello friends! I thought I would share a quick House Renovation Update!! I feel like there is SO much to share, so I will try and keep this one quick for you all!

First of all, we are still living in a rented holiday cottage, which I am SO grateful for, as during our last renovation we lived in the house the WHOLE time and it was REALLY, really hard!!  I’m also pregnant at the moment, which of course, makes things even harder!! Will we get back into the house pre-baby?!! Honestly, I don’t think so! Which is heart breaking of course, but also, I kinda love Suffolk and we have to do what’s best for the baby and ourselves and let’s be honest… the house just isn’t ready yet!

More Ceilings Came Down

Over the past few months have have taken a LOT of ceilings down, we were considering leaving the day room ceiling up, but eventually we made the decision for it coming down as we wanted to strengthen the floor joists on the first floor, so it kinda had to happen. It has added on a little more cost and a little more time to the build, but we want strong floors and we also love taking down ceilings as it gets rid of 200 years of dirt, dust and grot which has been festering between the ceiling and floorboards. Which isn’t really a huge issue if you plan on laying carpets, but if you love wood floors like I do, it’s actually a really nice way to clear out that ‘old house smell’.

Stud Walls Are Starting To Go Up!!

This is probably the most exciting thing to have happened in months!!!!! We finally have stud walls starting to go up!!! I’m SO excited!! It’s not time to board or plaster yet, but just seeing the timber dividers is REALLY exciting!!! PS. This is the baby’s room!!

The Budget Is Out Of Control!!

Finally, I just want to mention budget as I don’t want to give anyone any false impressions of renovating and honestly, the whole time I have been trying REALLY hard to be honest about the budget because it’s important. Let’s be real here. The budget is out of control. It’s a concern. I’m not gonna lie. We are spending a FORTUNE on builders, materials and the likes. It’s a LOT, but honestly, it just has to be done and that money has to be spent because we need to get it finished and we need to move back in! Thankfully, I love all our furniture from our last house and I’m pretty good at ‘making do’, but right now, there is VERY little budget for decor and all the money is going on the structural build stuff. So I think it will be a long while before it gets where I want it to be decor-wise, but the most important thing is that it’s habitable and safe. Especially with a baby on the way.

If you are considering a renovation house, I still 100% recommend it, but you are going to have to face facts that you might not buy each other christmas gifts for a sweet time, you might also be skipping holidays and social events for a while too as 99% of your cash will be spent on essentials like food, council tax, building materials, workmen etc etc etc. There’s no ‘fun money’ right now!! Also, whatever you think it’s going to cost… double it! I know it’s a cliche, but it’s true. Materials are going up all the time and you just don’t know what’s going to crop up behind a shower unit or whatever. Try to leave yourself as much budget as possible and don’t think of it as money for a Loaf sofa, because chances are you will be spending it on much less glamorous purchases. I honestly don’t want to scare anyone here, but I can promise you, no renovation EVER comes in under budget!! Like I said, I still 100% recommend it, but I do want to make people aware of the costs and the unforeseen work!
