Have You Seen The Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection?
Hello friends! Today I want to stop by and have a quick chat about the Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection. This collection is part of the Mulberry 50th Anniversary collection, which has seen some amazing collaborations, including one with Alexa Chung and Richard Malone. The Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection is a limited edition collection which is influenced by Priya’s Nigerian-Indian heritage in which hair holds such importance, and her fascination with hair as a means of identity, protest and expression. It celebrates the artistry, rituals and symbolism of Afro-Caribbean hair and Priya’s own personal narrative, which is brought to life through the capsule’s unique designs.
This collection is super cool and beautifully combines the luxe leathers Mulberry are famed for, as well as the vibrant colours, prints and general effortless London Cool that Ahluwalia that is known for. I also love this collection as it’s one of first times we have seen a truly unisex collection from Mulberry… and sustainable as it’s all made from surplus leathers. OK! Let’s chat about the Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection!
Mulberry 50th Anniversary
This year sees the 50th anniversary of the Mulberry brand and OMG! They have brought the party!!! I feel like Mulberry dropped off the radar for a few years prior to now and I’m wondering if it’s because they were secretly working away on creating the most epic year EVER!! So far we have seen a collection of reinvented Bayswater bags by Richard Malone. A re-release of the iconic Alexa Chung x Mulberry Alexa bag, which includes new colour ways AND new sizes of the bag. We have also seen the Sadie Saddle Satchel bag with a limited edition typography clasp, which is so cool. It’s a more subtle release, but I think is a really wearable bag and will become super sought after in the future. I can’t wait to see what they release next as part of their 50th birthday celebrations!
“Crafted entirely from surplus fabrics and leather, the Mulberry x Ahluwalia collection heroes the Portobello Tote silhouette, our first 100% sustainable leather bag, launched in 2019.”
Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Review!
The Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection is REALLY exciting!! I love the fact that they have made each and every bag out of surplus leather, making it a 100% sustainable collection – for the first time ever NO LESS! It also makes it a super limited edition collection and a future collectors item. It’s also unusually we as have never seen a unisex collection from Mulberry; Sure we have seen men wear the larger Bayswater bags in the past and women wearing the Mulberry City Backpack, but generally, the collections feel very masculine or feminine; this collection is the first time we have seen a truly unisex collection.
The Mulberry x Ahluwalia Portobello Tote Bag Collection a very ‘cool’ collection; very modern, fashion forward and generally just very exciting. A lot of Mulberry bags are quite classic and timeless, where as this one has more of a minimalist directional gender-neutral vibe. Which feels really exciting. This is a collection for the coolest fashion editors and style style stars…. both male and female.
The bags can be worn as a top-handle classic ‘carrier bag’ style bag, or can be worn over the shoulder or as a cross body bag. The bags are inspired by the familial bonds that happen through black hair and the craftsmanship that goes into it. It’s a celebration of culture, traditions and nurture. The same care and detail a mother puts into her childrens’ hair is reflected in the quality, craftsmanship and the uniqueness of the designs of the bags.
When it comes to styling these bags, they look amazing worn with a vintage levi’s and slouchy tee-shirt , as well as a super modern and luxe outfit from The Row or even with a utilitarian boiler suit. Admittedly this collection isn’t as universal as bags like the Bayswater or the Alexa, but that’s what makes it so special. If it’s for you, it’s REALLY for you! And I love the fact it’s like nothing we have ever seen from Mulberry before!
“I wanted to celebrate those familial bonds that happen through Black hair and how it really is craftsmanship that passes on. It is a celebration for me.”
