Generally the Chanel bags which have a double flap are the larger style bags in the fabrics like tweed, jersey and calfskin leather as these are softer materials and the double flap helps to keep the structure of the bag. However, I have a wool 2.55 bag which has no double flap and I have seen other fabric bags in a sloucher style which only have one flap. Also the classic black caviar flap bags in the medium and larger sizes tend to have the double flap. Smaller sized Chanel bags tend not to, as well as seasonal styles, but there’s no hard and fast rule as to which ones do and which don’t. Generally speaking it’s the larger bags and the softer material bags which have a double flap.
The double flap is important for keeping the structure of the bag, which is why some Chanel bags have the double flap and others don’t – this tweed 2.55 bag for example has a double flap as it’s larger and made of fabric. However, it’s worth noting that the double flap Chanel bags tend to be heavier to carry, especially if they are leather and have less internal space.
Why did Chanel discontinue single flap?
The single flap Chanel bags still exist but only in certain styles, in the classic flap bag it was discontinued as the double flap helps to keep the structure of the bag over a longer period of time and Chanel believe that their Classic flap bags are designed to be worn, loved and used for decades. As part of this ethos they want their bags to retain their structure as long as possible. The caviar bags tend to hold their structure a lot better than the lambskin bags as the lambskin leather is a lot softer.

I have a good collection of Chanel bags and my personal favourites are the classic flap bag, the WOC bag, the Boy bag and the Deauville bag. All of these are fabulous, beautifully made and if not classic by name, still stand the test of time.

Chanel hardware being coloured gold or silver is a personal preference. I personally prefer gold hardware as I love the look of the glossy gold on black caviar leather, however, it’s really down to the owners taste and what colour of jewellery they tend to wear. Experts have noted those who like vintage clothing and vintage styles often prefer gold hardware, where as more modern, minimalist dressers ofter prefer silver harder.

Is the Chanel Large Classic Flap bag heavy?
Yes, the Chanel Large Classic Flap bag is heavy. I have it and I love it, but it can get very heavy. I tend to wear mine in the winter when I have a coat on as this stops the bag from digging into my shoulder too much and I tend not to overstuff it with heavy items too. The high quality leather, leather lining and sturdy chain make it a heavier bag.
Which Is the Best Chanel bag for every day?
I have a good collection of Chanel bags and I would say the best bag for every day is the Chanel Deauville, which is a brilliant, easy to carry, great for every occasion tote bag. The Chanel Wallet on chain is also brilliant if you like smaller cross body bags. And finally either the Chanel boy bag or medium classic flap bag is great for a great smart every day bag. Especially good for those who like a mid-size bag and dress fairly smart. I would say the boy bag is marginally more comfortable on the shoulder because of the leather strap and the flap bag is more durable in the caviar leather compared to the lambskin leather.
What is the Worst Chanel bag for every day?
Personally, I would say the worst Chanel bags for every day use are the pale coloured lambskin bags, as these tend get very dirty and suffer from colour transfer easily. I would also advise you to avoid any style of bag which is especially heavy, like the Chanel GST, it’s beautiful, but can be heavy for every day use. Finally, any Chanel bag which is made of tweed or sequins as these are not so good for every day use. If in doubt, stick to a black caviar leather bag in a fairly classic style. This way you are keeping it simple and if you change your mind, you can always sell it on for a great price and buy a different bag.
