Vlogging Kit For Beginners
Hello friends! Today I want to share my recommended Vlogging Kit For Beginners! If you want to make youtube videos, you can do it on a budget! In fact, I would even argue it’s cheaper than running a blog and potentially more fun and more lucrative! I love making videos and I always thought it would be really costly and really time consuming, but I promise, it isn’t and it’s super fun! So today I want to give you my Vlogging Kit For Beginners… on a budget!
How Make YouTube Videos On A Budget!
Before we get started, I just want to mention that you can spend a FORTUNE making videos! You can hire a videographer, editor, travel miles, buy loads of props and so the list goes on, but personally, I find it easy to make videos on a budget and today I want to share my best tips and tricks! Of course, you can always upgrade things as and when it’s needed, but to start with, just figure out you like making video content with what you have! Let’s go!
Vlogging Equipment For Beginners
Camera
I personally film on the Olympus pen camera or the Canon G7XII, however, the new iPhone 12 Max Pro is SO good that you could easily just use this instead! Especially to get started, hell, I once even filmed a video on my Macbook inbuilt camera and it got 5,000 views! Audiences are really forgiving with new YouTubers and if the camera isn’t crystal clear, they won’t mind, so honestly, just use the best you have for now, and get started! You can always upgrade as time goes on, I would personally recommend the Canon G7XII as a great on-the-go vlogging camera. You can carry it around easily and it’s super light, which helps avoid camera shake PLUS you can attach it to a tripod if you want. But if all you have is an iPhone, then use that!
iMovie
I use iMovie to edit all my videos! It’s easy to use, free on a Mac and honestly a great piece of software. If you aren’t on a Mac, there is a free PC alternative, but I haven’t used it, so I don’t want to recommend it, but just have a google and see what you find!
Tripod
I’d recommend investing in a cheap tripod, either a gorilla tripod for on the go, or a larger tripod for using at home for sit-down videos. You can always upgrade to a gimble, but again, do that at a later date after you figure out if vlogging suits you or not! Just a reminder her, not everyone likes making videos, I thought I would HATE it, but I think it’s so much fun and other people think they will love it and actually, find they hate it! So give it a go and see how it feels!
Large Memory Card
Memory cards are the BEST! Invest in one which will give you SO much memory! I have a 64GB one which I use for filming and I find it EXACTLY what I need! It won’t cost you much, but it will mean you can film SO much content and rarely run out of memory! Buy a 128GB memory card for £20.95.
TubeBuddy
TubeBuddy is PERECT for new YouTubers, it will help you research topics, keywords and so much more! There is a free version which is worth having, or you can upgrade to a paid-for version. It’s brilliant! Every big YouTuber uses TubeBuddy and SO many of them credit it for helping get their videos seen!
Canva or PicMonkey
Why do you need a photo editing platform for YouTube? For your thumbnails! That’s right! Thumbnails are SO important for getting YouTube views! An enticing thumbnail can make or break your video and Canva and PicMonkey are most bloggers fave ways to produce them! I personally love PicMonkey, but Canva also works really well as you can create and save templates rather than creating each thumbnail from scratch each time. Thank me later!
Affiliate Marketing Agency
This isn’t essential, but you may as well do it, especially if your YouTube video is fashion or beauty focused. Sign up to AWIN to add affiliate links into your description so your viewers can shop what you recommend and you can make a little commission from the sales, meaning you can invest in more equipment and make your content better!
Lighting
Lighting is key for both video and photos. If you are vlogging you might want to rely on natural lighting, but ideally try to vlog in the day. Or if you are doing sit down chatty videos, try to sit in front of the window for really pretty natural light. If you do want to invest in some affordable lighting, then I use one softbox light to light the background and a ring light to light my face. It’s also super flattering. I bought both of mine from Amazon and I would recommend them all day long! Also you can attach your camera onto the ring light meaning you won’t need a larger separate tripod for those chatty vids!

- TubeBuddy – for research & SEO
- Canva or PicMonkey – to create thumbnails
- Affiliate Marketing Agency – AWIN is great for beginners
- Lighting – natural light if you can, or a ring light and softbox light
Which Is Better Blog or Vlog?
Honestly, this depends on your personality, as if you hate being on camera, a vlog channel is never going to work for you, and vice versa with blogging. However, if you love both writing AND being on camera, I would say a vlog can be easier to grow and make you more successful faster. Audiences love video content and it’s a great way to get your audience you to know better and faster, plus you can more chance of a video going viral than a blog post going viral. In terms of affiliate sales, videos tend to convert better than blogs do too. Regardless of if you start a vlog or blog, it’s worth creating a mailing list to help promote your content too, you can do that for free via Convert Kit.

How To Start A Blog For Free And Make Money?
Unfortunately most blogging platforms like WordPress and Blogger do not allow you to monetise content in any way with their free blogging platforms, if you want to monetise blog content you will have to pay for either Squarespace (free trial here) or go self-hosted on WordPress. If you try to sneak in sponsored posts or affiliate links into the free version of WordPress then you will have your account terminated. HOWEVER, you can start an Instagram account for free and earn money with affiliate links and sponsored posts, OR you can start a YouTube channel for free and monetise that with sponsored posts, adsense and affiliate links.
