What Is Collagen Made Of?
Collagen is a protein which is naturally found in our bones, skin, muscles and connective tissues. The word itself comes from the Greek word ‘Kolla’ which means ‘glue’ and that is literally what it is. It holds the body today, it makes us stronger; our skin, our muscles, our bones, everything! Whilst the beauty industry loves collagen for the plumping, lifting and elasticity it gives to our skin, it’s also really important to remember that it is amazing for our bodies as a whole, both for men and women. I recently wrote this post and today I want to talk about what it is made of and where it comes from. Again, I’ve worked with Rejuvenated on this post as they are my favourite supplements brand and I truly think that their products are the creme de la creme!
Is Collagen Vegan?
Collagen comes from several animal sources, so on the whole, it isn’t vegan-friendly, but there is one ‘glue’ boosting plant options for you, which we will discuss below and there’s also a vegetarian option too which comes from egg membrane. Something for everyone right? And Rejuvenated have both vegan and non-vegan options too.
Different Types & What They Do!
Hydrolysed Marine Collagen: This is sourced from fish. It is highly absorbable and rich in amino acids (proline, glycine, hydroxyproline) which are all key in the formation of collagen. This supplement is famed for it’s benefits for skin, joints, organs, blood vessels, digestion, bones, nails and hair.
Egg Membrane Collagen: For the veggies, this is derived from egg membrane. It supports connective tissue, joints, wound healing and building muscle.
Bovine Collagen: This comes from cows skin, bones and muscles. Please note that these are bi-products of the meat industry, rather than the reason for dairy farming. It has a high content of glycine and proline which are key in production of creatine and building muscle.
Chicken Collagen: This is derived from chicken helps to support healthy joints.
Vegan Collagen: There is no ‘vegan’ alternative due to the fact that all collagen has to come from animal based sources. Brands however have created ingredients to mimic the effects that collagen has on the skin. For example – Rejuvenated formulated Botan-icol – a plant based booster. Botani-col has been put together from a combination of plants to offer amino acids in the same combined ratio of those in animal forms. It’s similar to marine and helps support skin, joints, organs, blood vessels, digestion, bones, nails and hair.
