I Know This Isn’t A Normal Way To Celebrate Your Birthday…

Hello friends! Happy belated birthday to me!!!! Today I want to have a chat with you all about how I spent my birthday and why I think it’s a slightly unusual but kind of amazing way to spend your big day!

Let’s go back a few years here! Traditionally I’ve found birthdays hard! I think it started around 22. I remember feeling stressed and really feeling pressure to have the MOST FUN ever, combined with self doubting feelings of ‘I’m not where I want to be in my life’, ‘what have I really achieved?’ and ‘sh*t I’m getting old!’ and maybe even a hint of ‘I’m not worth the fuss’. I often ended up going out drinking to ‘celebrate’ but finding myself sad (sometimes shedding a few tears) and then waking up the next day with the post-birthday, post-drinking blues and a stinking hangover. When I got a little older, I would find myself buying an expensive dress or handbag to mark the occasion. It was definitely better for my mental health, perhaps not the best choice for my bank balance! After we bought a house, I stopped buying myself expensive gifts, because I had to save my cash for… I dunno… a fridge? Paint? A kitchen sink?!

Birthdays Can Be A Hard…

For the past few years I’ve spent my birthdays doing something a little different. Some might call it ‘personal development’, but I’m northern and I like to call it simply ‘learning’. That’s right folks, this birthday I spent the day at the Build Your Audience Live Event with Janet Murray learning the in’s and out’s of LinkedIn, Pinterest, Lead Magnets, YouTube strategy and generally building an online audience. I learnt so much and to be honest, it felt generally brilliant to be in a room filled with like-minded women (and some men) talking, sharing, thinking and learning.

My Advice To All The Non-Birthday Lovers…

So, here’s my advice to you, if birthdays are your happy place and you want to drink, shop and party with all your friends, enjoy! Live your life! It’s yo’ birthday, have a Bacardi like it’s your birthday. But if your like me and you find birthdays a little stressful and generally a little difficult, then consider spending the day doing something that includes learning, growing, improving and maybe, just maybe, you’ll have a pretty awesome day and feel really good about being one year older and wiser.

A huge thank you to Janet Murray for hosting an incredible event and inviting me along, you can hear her podcast, download her guides or find out more about her live events on the Janet Murray website. Oh and my blue dress in the photos is by Boden.

I love this idea. I’ve never been a big fan of birthdays either but turning them into something positive is a great idea.
