New To Podcasts? Here’s TEN Episodes To Get You Started!

It’s no secret I’m a HUGE podcast junkie! I listen to SO many of them and honestly, I clock more hours on the podcast app than I do with Netflix. I listen on the dog walk, when I’m driving, commuting and evening when I’m shooting content. I’m addicted! However, I’ve heard sooooo many people say the words ‘I’d love to listen to podcasts but I don’t know where to start’. So, my friends, today I’m going to tell you about not just 10 great podcasts, but specifically 10 great podcast episodes to get you started. Y’all ready?!

Serial: ‘Season 1, Episode 1. The Alibi’

The podcast which relaunched ALL podcasts. Before Serial, podcasts were a dying (or dead) medium which no-one cared about. And then This American Life released Serial and we all went wild for podcasts. If you ask 10 podcast listeners what got them hooked, I can guarantee at least 9 of them will say ‘Serial’. Which is why I feel it’s only fair to suggest you listen to season 1, episode 1 and see how you feel, but as far as I’m concerned, the world is filled with two people, those who love it and those who haven’t listened. I’ve never met anyone who listened and didn’t like it.

Heavyweight ‘#2 Gregor’

I love Heavyweight, it’s a brilliant podcast, but I think my favourite episode ever has to be Gregor. It’s funny, insightful, moving and it even has a celebrity cameo. Honestly, if you don’t love this episode, I’m not sure we can be friends!

Mystery Show ‘Case 3 Belt Buckle’

One of the greatest pieces of radio you’ll ever hear. The story of a belt buckle, beautifully told. So lovely you might cry happy tears.

This Is Love ‘#11 Nothing Compares To You’

A peek behind the curtain of Prince’s life, music and unexpected love. This Is Love podcast is made by the same team as Criminal, but it’s all stories related to the heart. I think this is my favourite episode to date and you don’t have to be a Prince fan to love this episode.

Criminal ‘#71 A Bump In The Night’

This was a tough pick for me as Criminal is one of my favourite podcasts and it’s the one I listen to the most because I find it the best podcast for drifting off to sleep. That’s not code for ‘it’s boring’, it’s just soothing. It’s not a true crime podcast, it’s more human than that. Often funny, always interesting, never scary. Start with A Bump In The Night, but I also loved Jolly Jane and Angie, but honestly, there’s soooo many great ones.

The Heart Of It With Estee Lalonde: ‘Mom’

This short-lived podcast from Estee Lalonde was really brilliant. She only did a handful of episodes, but honestly, each one was so well written and produced, it’s still a great one to listen to. There’s not really a dud episode in the series, but I would say start with Mom.

Lizard People:Conspiracy & Comedy: ‘Vampires Are Real’

I’m 100% convinced vampires are real now thanks to this episode of Lizard People. I would be scared, but honestly, I was too busy laughing to feel fear. Also if you love a little Hollywood gossip/weirdness, then you’re gonna love this episode!

Reply All: ‘#44 Shine On You Crazy Goldman’

Another super hard one to choose from as there’s so many great episodes, especially in the early days as the later episodes have become a lot of tech-focused, which I’m sure is really popular with a lot of their core listeners, but I like the earlier episodes which are a little more… unusual!? I’d say start with Shine On You Crazy Goldman and I also loved A Stranger Says I Love You, which was an app created a few years ago by artist/writer Miranda July.

This American Life: ‘#129 Cars’

I didn’t know I need this episode in my life but honestly, I do. I listened to it twice in one day, on my own and then with my boyfriend. I knew he wouldn’t listen to it if I described it to him, so I went ahead, pressed play for the second time that day and forced him to listen. He loved it. I loved it. Go listen to This American Life: 129 Cars.

Rookie: The Year of Emotions feat. Lorde

Unfortunately the Rookie Podcast was short-lived, but I’ll forever love this episode featuring Lorde. It’s rare you hear such a huge star talking so honestly and frankly about their life, loves and music and the close relationship between Tavi  and Ella makes it a really lovely interview filled with really interesting conversations and even an exclusive listen of a sample track. Ps. I’m kinda cheating with this one as the Lorde interview is split into two parts, so listen to this episode and the next, but trust me, it’s worth it!
