Everything You Need To Know About The Chanel Boy Bag

Hello friends, I’m here to tell you everything you need to know about the Chanel Boy Bag. I got mine a fair few years ago and I love using it so much. In this post I’m going to chat quality, price, practicality and compare it to a few other Chanel bags. I’m hoping I can help you make the best handbag decisions for you… Y’all ready?!

My Chanel Boy Bag Story

Ok, bare with me on this one as it sounds like the most ridiculously Boujee situation ever, but my boyfriend bought himself a new car for his birthday and on the way home, he decided I should have something nice too. So he went home via Chanel and got me the Boy bag! I was shook! No joke, I couldn’t believe it, it still seems like a bit of a dream! It was one had he had always seen and really liked and amazingly in the time since I’ve had it, the price has increased a fair bit so looking back, it was actually a pretty great investment! Anyway! That’s my Chanel Boy bag story, a little flashy and surreal but what a fun memory…

Quality

I have a few Chanel bags and the Boy bag, just like the others, is stunning quality. The lambskin leather is buttery soft, the metal is chunky and heavy, it also doesn’t smell like ‘metal’ (hands up if that makes sense to you!) and also it’s got a really nice sound to it. The stitching is of course perfect, inside and out and it’s just got a indefinable quality and beauty to the quality and craftsmanship.

Practicality

In my opinion, the Boy Bag is a really practical little handbag. It has a single flap which is so much easier to negotiate when you are on the go. Plus between the single flap and fabric lining, the weight of this bag is way lighter than the Chanel Classic Flap, which again, I love. Also the shoulder strap has a section of leather, rather than chunky chain, which sits over your shoulder making this bag way more comfortable ok the shoulder.

Limitations

Ok, so the limitations with this bag… firstly, on the inside there isn’t a zipped section, I don’t personally mind this, but some might. There’s also no slip pocket on the back side of the bag. Whilst the design of the bag is cleaner without the back pocket, I have to admit, I do use back pockets a lot. Especially when I’m in London and I’m constantly getting my Oyster card and out of my back. It’s not a deal breaker but in some ways, it might be nice to have a back slip pocket. I think the biggest limitation for the Boy Bag is the fact that it doesn’t (as far as I’m aware!) come in caviar leather. Don’t get me wrong, the lambskin is stunning and buttery soft, but the caviar leather is brilliant because it’s so hard wearing and it might be nice to have the option of the caviar leather, especially if you are planning on wearing it every day! Aside from that though… this bag is a dream!

Occasion

One of the things I love about the Boy Bag is that it doesn’t scream Chanel like the classic flap, but it’s still super recognisable as Chanel. It feels a tiny bit more low key and causal because it does have a more modern, edgy feel. However, it looks just as great in the day time as it does in the evening. It’s got more of a ‘cool girl’ vibe, but you can deffo wear it to brunch as well as a bar. Sure you might fear spilling a drink or two on it, but it would look great with big hair, killer heels and silk slip top under a fitted blazer.

Multiple Ways To Wear

The Chanel Boy Bag can be worn two ways, well, three for some people. You can wear it over your shoulder so it sits at your hip. Or you could double the strap over so it sits under your arm at a short length. Also, I’ve recently seen a lot of girls wearing it as a cross body bag. The shoulder strap is adjustable and if you are petit, it’s possible!

Design Options

When I got my Boy Bag there was not the wealth of design options you see today. I don’t think there was even the small boy or the Boy-style WOC. Don’t get my wrong, I love my boy (and the boy who bought it for me!) but there’s so many good colours and embellishments to be found of the Boy now. Personally, I love the Graffiti style Boy as well as the metallic dark green with oil slick hardwear boy. Both of which I’d love to add into my collection!

Chanel Boy Bag Vs Classic Flap

This is a touch one and I could probably write a whole blog post on this, but I’ll try… so the boy bag is edgier, the classic flap is more elegant. Aside from that, I have to say the boy bag is more comfortable to carry because it has the leather section on the shoulder. It’s also lighter because it doesn’t have the double flap and it has less chain. Finally, the Boy bag is cheaper than the classic flap handbag, however, the classic flap… is iconic! It’s THE Chanel bag and it’s a classic, the Boy bag is still classed as a fashion seasonal bag and is it as timeless as the classic flap? I’m not sure! I’ll talk more about this soon I promise!

Price

Oh Lordy! I wish I could remember how much my Boy Bag cost, so I’m going to have to take a guess with this one. We got it around 4 years ago and in my head, it cost around £2,600. However, I might be wrong! Fast forward 4 years and the Boy Bag has seen a rise in popularity and price and it now stands at around £3,700. However, if you’re looking to score on on the pre-loved market, you can find them for anywhere between £2,000 to £3,000. It’s worth keeping an eye on Vestiaire Collective, which is my go-to online store for pre-loved designer!

Where To Buy

The Chanel boy bag can be bought in all Chanel stores, stock levels permitting of course. And it’s also available at airport stores, which means if you are flying outside of Europe, you can get 20% off with duty free shopping. Again, this is as long as stock levels permit, but because the Boy Bag isn’t a ‘Classic’ Chanel style, it is available in these stores at the duty free price. You can also find the Chanel Boy bag online on the pre-loved market, my personal favourite is Vestiaire Collective, but also check out FarFetch, Fashionphile and The Real Real.

Gold, Silver Or Seasonal Hard Wear

I have the antique silver hardwear on my Boy Bag, but as you might expect, there’s a whole host of different colours to choose from. I’ve seen bright, glossy gold, a solid black, rainbow oil slick and glossy painted finishes to match the shade of leather. Personally I will always regret not buying the oil slick finish (it was a seasonal colour a few years ago and it was divine!) but my favourite has to be the antique silver. It has a cooler, rock ‘n’ roll look to it and personally (this is just my opinion) I think the glossy gold is a little to bright and brash for the Boy Bag. I love the gold on the classic flap, but on the Boy Bag I think you need a slightly edgier looking hardwear.
