Ten Podcasts You NEED To Subscribe To!
Hello friends! I’m back again with another podcast edit, because quite frankly… I’m a podcast addict! No really, just ask Adorn Girl, I pretty much start every conversation with the words ‘I was listening to a podcast and….’. Anyway. I’ve worked my way through a whole heap of podcasts to bring you the best of the best. Ladies (and gents), here are Ten Podcasts You NEED To Subscribe To!
Uncover: Escaping NXIVM
New from CBC (who are the team behind Find Cleo and Someone Knows Something, which are also great podcasts!) Uncover: Escaping NXIVM is all about the self-help group / cult who hit the news a few years ago. Remember the actress from Smallville who was exposed as a cult leader / cult bigwig? Well, that’s NXIVM. It has different levels to it, at the base it’s essentially self-help courses, and as you move higher up the ranks it gets to cult levels. We are talking Master / Slaves, invitation only, collateral and branding. You have to subscribe!
Criminal
Still one of my favourite podcasts. It’s less about true crime, serial killers and murders and more stories from the world of crime. For instance, a girl who lived for months with someone secretly living in the crawl space above her apartment, a woman who stayed in an B&B and got home to find a photo of her sleeping at night because the owner had let herself into their room to take a sneaky snap. As well as infamous lawyers, escape artists, conspiracy theories and historical stories of seances and prohibition.
The Teacher’s Pet
Australia’s answer to Serial. It’s essentially a missing person case and suspected murder, but it’s so much more. I don’t wanna say too much, but it’s good!
Lizard People: Comedy & Conspiracy
I found this podcast by complete accident and I’ve since become hooked. Lizard People: Comedy & Conspiracy is hosted by comedy writer Katelyn Hempstead who is charming, hilarious and clearly obsessed with conspiracy theories. Each week, a guest (generally a comedian friend of hers) tries to convince her a conspiracy theory is true. If you love hearing about conspiracy theories which are super well researched, but also discussed with a SOH, then you will love this. I’ve literally laughed out loud at this podcast, as well as announced ‘I’m sold! This is legit!’. It’s SO good!
Mystery Show
I will NEVER not recommend this and I will ALWAYS be one of the super fans campaigning for it’s return. Starlee Kine is the BEST writer and I love her so much. I’ve listened to all her stories she did for This American Life, I’ve searched for her on YouTube to watch all her live performances and I’ve even bought a book because she wrote a short story for it. Listen to Mystery Show. Then in the same way you re-watch your favourite episodes of Friends, re-listen to your favourite episodes of Mystery Show.
Sweet Teen Club
Imagine a podcast all about Sweet Valley High and all your favourite 90’s movies. Then you’ll get to Sweet Teen Club! I love this podcast so much that I recently tweeted one of the hosts to say ‘More episodes please!’. I didn’t a reply, but I hopeful she read it and they’ll publish more soon. If you are a true 90’s kid and you love chatting all things 90’s fashion, music and pop culture, then you will love this podcast. It’s kinda low-fi and DIY, which is totally on brand for the 90’s!
S-Town
If you haven’t listened to this already… I’m kinda judging you. It’s from the makers of This American Life and it’s SO good. It’s not Serial Season 2, it’s totally different, but it’s this kinda epic real-life adventure full of twists and turns and I don’t wanna say anymore because I’ll ruin it for you. But please, if you haven’t already. Go listen.
Dirty John
I love this podcast I listened to it twice over. I may even listen to it one more time it was so good. It’s about a con man, a murder and so much more. The writer and narrator has the BEST old school detective / PI voice you will ever hear and it’s just a really well produced, well researched, interesting podcast. A lot of people are listening to Dr Death at the moment and drawing comparisons, personally, I prefer Dirty John to Dr Death, but you may as well subscribe to both and decide for yourself! (Did you notice how I did a BOGOF podcast recommendation there?!)
Slow Burn
Full disclosure here. I’ve subscribed but not yet started to listen to Slow Burn. HOWEVER, one of my favourite people recommended it to me and if it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me! It’s all about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky’s big ol’ mess back in the 90’s. I was a little too young to understand it all at the time, but I deffo remember it happening, so I’m looking forward to finding out more. It’s about time Monica Lewinsky managed to reclaim her reputation and the world wakes up and realises that judging the 22 year old intern, rather than the grown ass president is not cool. #JustSaying
Serial Season 3
Yep. It’s back. One court room told week by week. I’m on episode two so far and so glad to have it back! I like the way it’s changed format, season 1 could never be recreated, so they haven’t tried. It’s really interesting and I can’t wait for the weeks to go on and the reoccurring characters (judges, lawyers etc) to take shape. Of course it’s well written and interesting and though provoking, Serial is the mother of all podcasts. Subscribe now, firstly because it’s a brilliant podcast, secondly because if you don’t listen to it, you’re gonna miss out on all the coffee-machine moments (that’s like a water cooler moments, but for the intellectuals).

Why are you still reading?! Go subscribe! PS. My radio is by VQ and despite the fact it looks cute and vintage-y, it’s actually a digital radio which also connects to your iPhone so you can play your podcasts out of it. You can read more about them here, they are BRILLIANT radios!
I’m on season 2 if They Walk Among Us and I’m hooked!
Ah yes!! That’s a good one! I liked the one about the man in the bag!!!!!
You always have the BEST podcast recommendations!
Oh my goodness if you like true crime podcasts you seriously need to listen to Small Town Murder. There is nothing else like it. Also, Dear John is by far one of my favorites. It is narroated so well. I wish more podcasts were like it/that it didn’t have to end!
