‘I Wish I Could Start A Blog, But I’m Too Late’ (Spoiler: It’s Never Too Late #YouCanDoIt)

Is It Too Late To Start A Blog?

I hear this a lot. I hear similar statements with the same sentiment; ‘I nearly started one years ago, I wish I had’ or ‘my uni tutor told me I should start a blog, I should have listened’ blah. blah. blah. Well, I’m here to call Bullsh*t on ALL those statements. No really, if you want to start a blog, YOU CAN DO IT! It’s NEVER too late! It’s like saying ‘I wish I could start a wedding cake business, but other people make wedding cakes’ or ‘I would love to be a film editor, but there’s already film editors in the world’. There’s a lot of EVERYTHING in the world and I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more wedding cake makers in the world than there are bloggers and even if there is a lot of wedding cake makers, I’m sure yours would be different. So you may as well just start it already, because it’s never too late to start a blog.

What If I Don’t like it

If you start your blog and actually you don’t enjoy it, just quit. No biggie! Close your account, set it to private, stop doing it. You don’t know these things until you try them and it’s better to spend 2 months blogging and then deciding it’s not for you, than two years thinking you should start a blog. It’s like Nike say… just do it.

How Do I Get Followers?

You just do. I know it sounds crazy, but you blog, you tweet, you Instagram, you pin and eventually you will get followers. You might get 5 followers, you might get 5 million and does it really matter anyway?! The number of followers should NEVER be your motivation, but it’s like they said in that dreadful 90’s classic Field Of Dreams, ‘If you build it, they will come’. And if they don’t, it’s their loss, but they will, it might not be millions, but I’m sure people will be interested and hit that follow button!

I’m REALLY Bad At Taking Photos

Believe me, so were the best of us. But once you figure out how to get the most out of your iPhone camera and maybe invest in a camera and a few lenses, you’ll get better and if you don’t, you could always enlist a photography-enthusiast friend to help, or even hire a local photographer to work with you a few hours a week to get all the photos you need. But seriously, you will get better at taking photos and figure out the best ways to edit them too, and you’ll feel like a pro in no time!

I’m Not Very Good At Writing

Nor am I!

I Don’t Have The Money To Set Up A Blog

I will openly admit my blog costs a LOT to run now, but it started off costing nothing. I set up my blog on wordpress.com, which is free, and I used a free blog template, the clothes and accessories I already owned and my iPhone 3 camera. Cost? Nada. Just because you’re favourite bloggers spend oodles of cash on equipment, doesn’t mean you have to. Just use what you have and enjoy it, it doesn’t have to cost you a penny. Eventually you might upgrade to your own URL, a shinny new template and photography equipment, but for now, go DIY and use what you already have. One day you might want to invest, but the money side of it, should never hold you back!

I Don’t Have The Time To Blog

We all have free time in our day/week/month, it just depends how you use it. You might draft blog posts on your commute or your lunch break or even when you are unwinding at night. Alternatively,  you might have a desk in your room and work on it each and every evening and weekend. You can put in as much or as little time as you want into your blog, you can choose to publish content every day or every month. It’s up to you. If you start it on wordpress with a basic theme, you could be writing your first post within half an hour, if you want to spend a little longer choosing your theme, fonts and integrating your social media, then yes, it will take a little longer, but personally, I started off basic and picked things up as I went along. No-one is asking you to write a super slick professional blog from day 1, you can do whatever you want with it and there’s nothing wrong with a lo-fi blog! Whilst some people HAVE made a career our of their blogs, you don’t have to. You might have an awesome job and earn a f*ckload of money and love what you do, but want to have a blog in your spare time. A blog can be anything you want it to be; it can be a hobby or a profession, it can be slick or DIY, essays or bite-sized, full of photos or full of words, updated often or updated when the mood strikes.

There’s So Many Other Blogs Out there, How will I make Mine Different?

YOU make it different.

If you want to start a blog, start the blog! Don’t put any pressure on yourself, don’t overthink your posts just do it! Think about it this way, if you are wishing you had started the blog 2 years ago and regretting the fact you didn’t, then in another 2 years, you will be regretting the fact you didn’t start it two years ago. However, if you DO start it now, then in 2 yeas time you will be super thankful you did start it. And if blogging isn’t for you… at least you know!

This post is great , I had the mentality of ‘I wish I’d started a blog’ and all the negative thoughts it will be rubbish and I don’t know what im doing or what to write etc. And your right its bullsh*t! but this year im turning 30 and i gave myself a real kick up the bum and started a blog and got on Instagram and im so pleased i did! Its not the best, I’m winging it and learning new things all the time but it’s such a great experience and i really enjoy it, I hope your post will encourage other people like me to kick their selves into gear and just go for it!

YES! An inspiration! I’ve been blogging off and on for years and years (really my whole life, almost!), and this time coming back after a few years “off” I felt like I missed the boat, and that blogging had changed too much for me to try to put myself in it. Thanks for this post reminding me that it isn’t too late!

This post is fabulous and really inspiring. I started my blog ages ago and fall in and out of when I post and how keen I am to improve my site, photos and use social media, but one thing remains I am glad I started when I did rather than putting it off and always wishing I had got stuck in. I spent a lot of time beating myself up that I wasn’t posting regularly and spending all of my free time working on it, but this just made me miserable. You are so right it should not be about the figures but your personal enjoyment, people will come as long as you are being 100% you!
