I going to say something here which makes me sound a little spoilt and I probably shouldn’t admit to, but here goes. The Chanel canvas tote bag was never my dream bag. In fact, I never even had it on my hypothetical Chanel wishlist, y’know, the kind of wishlist I would make whilst listening to the Gwen Stefani song ‘If I Was A Rich Girl’. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that it didn’t speak to me in the way that other Chanel goodies did, in fact, I never really thought of it much until I made a spur of the moment decision to buy it. And yes, I know gum is impulse purchase rather than a designer handbag, but I saw it, I actually had the money in my account and something about it told me ‘I need this bag, I won’t regret it’ and so I took the plunge and bought it. And DANNGGGG! I’m glad I did, as a year or so on, it turns out that the Chanel Canvas (or Chanel Deauville bag) tote bag is by far my most-used Chanel handbag in my collection. Who knew right?!! I had lusted over the Jumbo Classic flap bag for about 7 years before I got it, yet I decided on this bag in less than 7 minutes and I have used it about 100 times more! Why It’s SO Darn Good!

There are SO many reasons I love the Chanel canvas Tote bag, so bare with me and I’ll try not to make this the worlds’ longest blog post. First of all, it’s a nice big tote bag which fits all in your (and my) junk. From a laptop to snacks, phone chargers to make-up, it’s a spacious tote which is not only deep, but it’s also wide, so it’s a bit of a Mary Poppins bag. It’s semi-structured, not too stiff and not too floppy, so it looks just as good when it’s practically empty, as it does when it’s bursting full. Now this is a big one for me, the weight. Regular Chanel shoppers will know that some of the classic Chanel bags are heavy AF. My jumbo feels like I’m carrying bricks around when in reality, it’s only my keys, purse and phone. All that leather, hardware and chain really adds a lot of weight to the classic flap bag, where as the Deauville Tote is mostly canvas with a cotton lining and a minimal amount of leather and metal on the shoulder straps, which really keeps the weight of the handbag down. I can’t stress enough how important this is when you are hot-footing around London with mere minutes to get from one meeting to another.

The Dream & The Damage

I’ve had my Chanel canvas tote bag for well over a year now, and despite the fact I’m not overly careful with it, it’s barely shows any sign of wear and tear, which is more than I can say for my poor lambskin clutch. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I am slagging off my other bags, but with great beauty, comes great responsibility and the Deauville bag is not only hardwearing, comfortable to carry (thanks to the leather section on the shoulder straps), but it’s also comparatively lightweight. Another thing I love about the Chanel Canvas Tote Handbag, it’s really stylish and has a much more casual vibe, it can be dressed up or dressed down and I honestly think it could be used anywhere from the beach to the boardroom. It’s also ageless, my 24 year old sister loves it as much as my 64 year old mum, which gives me hope that I will still be wearing it in 30 years time! Finally, the price, with this tote, you get a lot of bag for your buck. It’s a large size bag and a classic Chanel design, yet you can pick it up vintage for around a thousand pounds (as I did) and about £2,500 for a brand new one.
