The Podcast Edit

Hello my friends, I thought it was about time I did another podcast edit. After all, I listen to enough of them, in fact, just to give you an insight into my life, I basically have my headphones in whenever I commute to London and a speaker next to me whenever I’m at home. I have a sizeable collection of headphones / speakers and radios, but the ones I LOVE the most are my collection of Ultimate Ears speakers. I have 4 of these now (the Wonderboom, Boom 2 and this yellow Blast), each in different rooms of the house, each matching the decor (don’t judge!!!). I love the UE speakers because they are super robust (I’m a dropper!), really colourful (I love those bright hues!), user-friendly (seriously, it’s ridiculously easy to synch these to your iPhone / laptop) and the sound quality is insanely good. Not to bang on about how good they are, but they even have a super long battery life and waterproof (seriously, you could go white water rafting with one of these bad boys!). Anyway, Enough about speakers and let’s chat podcasts!

The Murderers

I spend my day shooting flatlays with heart shaped blushers and pink flamingos, but all the while, I’m thinking about serial killers, murders, con artists and cold cases. Here are some of my favourite, albeit dark podcasts to tune in to!

Serial – I’m sure you’ve all listened to it already, but it’s basically the mothership podcast, so if you are new to podcasts, this is where you need to start.

Dirty John – The story of a con-artist which ends in a murder. I LOVED this podcast and I’ve listened to it in it’s entirety a few times now. Brilliant! I wish there were more podcasts like dirty john.

Accused – A cold case of a college girl. It’s got everything from a false confession to a list of possible suspects.

Someone Knows Something – Season 2 was my favourite. Followed by season 1, however, my boyfriend loved season 3. Either way, start with season 2. You won’t regret it!

Criminal – Bite sized podcasts about criminals, crimes, historical cases, conspiracy theories, escapes and so much more. It’s less dark than many of the other podcasts and it’s always really interesting and at times weird.

Haunted – A little cheesy at times, but it’s ghost stories. My inner teenager at a slumber party loves this one!

For the Hard Working Gal

Working from home can be kind of lonely and sometimes you need a little inspo to keep going, put your head down, stop procrastinating and get focused! If you need a little of this in your life, these are for you!

The Heart Of It with Estee Lalonde – From the YouTuber Estee Lalonde, really well produced, funny, interesting and thought provoking. What more would you expect from Estee?

Ctrl Alt Delete – From Emma Gannon, I tend to pick and choose these ones based on who she’s interviewing that week, but it’s a good one for the days when you feel like you need some girls around you and a bit of a ‘You can do it too’ pep talk!

She Means Business – A little ‘woo woo’ at times, but a really fun podcasts for female business owners. Often involves some great interviews.

Style Your Mind – Bitesized power chats from the pink haired life coach and author Cara Alwill Leyva. If you are having a bad day and need to let go to petty annoyances, this is the girl you need! Plus she’s funny.

Soulful PR With Janet Murray – So. Many. Podcasts!!! Janet Murray is PROLIFIC and her podcasts are filled with practical and actionable tips and lessons.

The High Low – Brought to you from journalists Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton. Includes topical chats, feminism and also lots of great reading / TV / podcast recommendations.

Creative Pep Talk – I haven’t listened to this one for a while, but whenever I do, I enjoy it. If you need some inspo just to keep going, this is the one. A great reminder that hard work and tenacity pay off.

The Lively Show – I hate to say it, but this one is a lot too woo woo for me, however so many of my friends love it, so maybe I’m just a stubborn Northerner and this feels way too ‘chai tea in LA’ for my ears. However it’s still on the list as it’s good for others, so it might be good for you!

Story Telling

And finally, the storytelling part of the post. Those tales from around the world and web which I love to hear. It gets me out of my own personal bubble and let’s me explore other peoples worlds whilst I snap and edit my day away.

This American Life – These are the guys who brought Serial to the world, they are actually a public radio station in the US but every show is aired as a podcast too. On the podcast app (and elsewhere too) you can only ever listen to the last 4 episodes. However, they have now released an app where you can listen to every single episode (of which there’s like 700!).

Heavyweight – Putting right the wrongs of the past. I know that sounds weird, but seriously. So beautifully written and really funny at times too. Gregor has to be my fave episode and I loved Buzz too. But all are great.

You Must Remember This – Tales of old Hollywood. Do you need to know anymore?!

The Mystery Show – Yes, I’m still banging on about how much I love this podcast. It’s no longer being made and only 6 episodes were ever created, but each and every one of them is perfect.

Reply All – In the past 12 months, this podcast has gotten increasingly sporadic and also become a little more tech focused. My suggestion is start at episode 1 and work your way through them. One of my all time fave podcasts.

The Moth – Storytelling by strangers at it’s best. Go listen.

Song Exploder – Totally muso and totally amazing. Each episode features a song writer talking through how they created the song, lyrics, music, production. Song writing is such a dark art and it’s so amazing to get such a deep insight into the process. They’ve featured some amazing people from Metallica, Lorde, Weezer, Grimes, Moby, Phoenix, Fleet Foxes and so many more.

S-Town – Again, from This American Life and again I’ve listened to it twice over. They actually started working on it before Serial and finished after, it was a long project but so incredibly amazing. It takes all kinds of twists and turns, and that’s all I’m gonna tell you!

The Butterfly Effect – At first this was only available via Audible (which is where I listened to it) but now it’s on the Podcast app. This series explores the effect of free porn on the internet and it’s mind-blowing, funny, interesting, non-judgemental… go listen!

The Wildcards

Mogul – The story of hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty. I’m no hip-hop girl, but I LOVED this podcast!

Big Mouth – Your new podcast BFF’s, listening to this is like hanging out with two of your favourite boys, Gurd Loyal & Simon Glazin.

Surprisingly Awesome – Weird stuff that’s surprisingly awesome. FYI there is so much more to flamingoes than how good they look!

Sweet Teen Club – All things 90’s with two awesome Aussie girls. They mainly chat about Sweet Valley High and that’s ok by me!

Rookie – Wishing this podcast would come back soon! Listen to the older episodes regardless!

Lore – Folklaw stories. Better than it sounds.

Longform Podcast – Interviews with writers about their work, processes and more.

Missing Richard Simmons – Mini series on 80’s fitness guru and how he disappeared from his every day life. It’s also a really lovely look at his life and how much joy he brought to the world!

So, there we have it! Hours upon hours of listening, discovering, scrolling, research and it’s allllllll here! Enjoy and DM me / email me if you listen to any any and you love them! Also a huge thank you to Ultimate Ears for gifting me the new Blast speaker, I LOVE your products!

I was the biggest Sweet Valley High fan (whatever happened to that film directed by Diablo Cody?) so Sweet Teen Club it is. I will also take You Must Remember This because I am obsessed with Hollywood and fame.
