Which Chanel Bag Is Best For You?

I always dreamed of owning a Chanel bag, but somehow, over time I have managed to aquire not just one Chanel, but a small collection. I know how it feels to lust after them and I also know it’s a huge decision figuring out which Chanel bag you want to buy. Not sure what size, colour finish or design you want? I got you! Which is why I thought I would write down a few pros and cons of some of the classic designs which I own.

The Boy Bag

My boyfriend always loved the Chanel Boy Bag and whilst I always thought it was super cool, It  was the Classic Flap I dreamed of owning. However, as soon as I got the Boy Bag, I completely fell in love with it! It can be be worn two ways; with the long shoulder strap, or with the strap doubled to make it shorter so it sits under your arm or you could carry it in the crock of your arm. The bulk of the chain is metal, but it also has a leather section which sits on your shoulder, which makes carrying it super comfortable. Another thing I love about this bag is the weight of it, compared to the Classic Flap it’s really lightweight, mainly due to it not having the second flap and it’s not leather lined.

Whilst I do worry that the Boy Bag is not classed as a ‘Classic’ style by Chanel, so I worry it might date over the next 10/20 years. I do adore this bag, it’s perfect for every day and it’s a great on-the-go bag. It has a bit of a rock ‘n’ roll edge to it compared to the Classic Flap, making it a slightly cooler handbag.

The Classic Flap – Small

Whilst this bag is technically called the ‘Small’ by Chanel, this is actually the size that most people imagine when they think of the Classic Flap handbag. It’s the most popular size and what most women consider to be the dream size. The size above is the ‘Medium’, which you can read more about below. Please note the ‘Medium’ is what most people consider is the ‘Jumbo’ but the ‘Jumbo’ is actually bigger again. Phew! I hope that makes sense! This is the bag I dreamed of owning, it was the dream, the goal, everything I wanted! Obviously I love it in black, but I couldn’t resist a colour and there was something so good about this green, I had to have it! However, there are some things you should know about it, firstly the size, this bag is actually smaller on the inside than you expect, partly because of the double flap taking up space, and partly because of the leather lining. It comfortably fits your purse, phone, keys and lipstick, but not a huge amount more.

The Boy Bag looks the same size from the outside but I can actually fit a lot more in the Boy Bag compared to the Classic Flap in small. As you would expect, the chain strap can be worn doubled over so the bag sits under your arm or in the crock of your arm, but personally I wear it over my shoulder and it’s the perfect length. I have seen girls wearing this bag cross-body but I think this is only possible if you are extra petite. If you decide to buy a coloured bag in super soft lamb skin, do be careful of colour transfer, as dark clothing like denim, can discolour the leather. This has happened to me, but you can always get them cleaned/spa’ed after a few years. If you are buying the Classic Flap to wear every day, the black caviar finish is a lot more hard wearing and durable. It wasn’t easy to track this bag down in green as not many were made; but that just makes it feel even more special. When I wear this bag, I literally feel like a million dollars, I love the colour, I love the design, I love everything about it!

The Classic Flap – Medium

As I mentioned above, the Classic Flap in Medium is what most people consider to be the Jumbo, in reality the Jumbo is the size above and there is an even bigger version which is like a laptop bag it’s so huge! This bag is beautiful, it has a flap ok the inside which again takes up space buy even so, this bag is nice and roomy, I can fit my classic iPad in here as well as my purse, phone, keys and a little more make-up than I can compared to the small size Classic Flap. The chain strap is longer on the Medium sized bag, so I find myself wearing it doubled over under my arm in the Summer, or the as a crossbody bag over a coat in the Winter. Personally I find it sits too low on me when I wear it long over one shoulder, but if you are taller than 5’6″, I think it would be the perfect length.

As much as I adore this handbag, I must admit when I put anything a little heavier in it, like my camera or iPad, it very quickly becomes very heavy. It’s fine if you drive to work and sit at a desk for most of the day, but if I’m roaming around London for the day going to meetings and press days, I need to be careful not to over-fill it! This is the Chanel which I know will still look amazing when I’m 60, it’s beautiful, classic, elegant… everything I could wish for!

The 2.55 Reissue Handbag

This Chanel Reissue bag is from 1999, it was part of the Millenium collection where the fabrics were less structured for a modern woman. This bag is made of wool and the classic quilting is referenced with the grid effect. My bag is vintage, so I got it from Vintage Heirloom, however, this is a classic design so it is still available in stores now in leather and any other seasonal finishes. I love this bag as my other Chanel bags are very ‘Boom! Check out my Chanel’ this bag has slightly more subtle branding and even though it could only be Chanel, only those in-the-know will instantly recognise it as a Chanel.

This is one of the Chanel bags I wear the most, I adore it’s roomy yet lightweight, it’s obviously a Chanel but it’s subtle branding makes it as suitable for everywhere from the supermarket to the members club. I love the easy style of it, it has a really casual feel to it, whilst some Chanel bags can look very smart and formal, this one like the Boy Bag is a little more casual.

Which Chanel Bag Is Best For You? Conclusion…

So, there we have it, my thoughts on four different styles of Chanel bags. I wish I could pick a favourite and say there is one perfect Chanel Bag, but I can’t, I love them all for different reasons and it all depends on my outfit, mood and what I’m doing that day. What I would say, is before you make your purchase, really think about your lifestyle; consider the leather finish you want (lambskin is beautiful and super-soft, but the calfskin in a caviar finish is much more hard wearing) as well as your own personal style, the size of the interior of the bag and the natural weight of the bag compared with how much you carry in your bag. It’s a big decision; but if you dream of owning a Chanel, you should treat yourself.

There are quite a few options which are slightly cheaper, like Clutches or the WOC (wallet on a chain) but if it’s not the dream bag, just wait a little longer and get the one you really want. It might seem like a good idea, but actually, you will only end up buying the one you want a few years later and making the first bag redundant. That being said, I also have the Chanel WOC and I love it for short errands around town and lunch. If you are buying a Chanel bag pre-owned and pre-loved, make sure you got to a trusted reseller not a marketplace as you need a to find a store which has a buyer who authenticates each piece before they sell it on to you.

Happy Shopping!

Would you recommend the Boy bag in black quilted or chevron design. Was planning to get in shiny gold hardware.

        Hi Lee,
I personally prefer the chevron design, I don’t know why, I just think it’s more beautiful in this design! but it’s really your decision!

Funnily enough, i like all the other chanel bags with gold hardwear, but i wanted the boy bag with silver hardwear, because i think it’s quite a rock and roll bag and i felt the silver looked a little edgier! xxxx

Hello, hello! I am very curious on how your 2.55 reissue wool bag is holding up. Can you please review the bag. Is it an easy to maintain material? How is it with rain, stain and being rubbed off? It will be good to know. Thank you!

Hi Faye, I got this bag as a vintage handbag, so I haven’t had it since the year 2000, but I have used it loads in the last 2 years and it had been used before I got it. I’m massively impressed at how the fabric and chain is holding it, it hasn’t pilled or lost colour. It’s pretty amazing!!

Thank you for replying me… I am actually looking at one online now and I could not find any review of this bag. I couldn’t see or feel it in person thus making me unsure to get it. But I do agree with you on your comment above about this bag. And I really like how it looks on you. It helps to see someone carries it… Have a happy day! Cheers!
