The first time I met Beth Ditto, I was living in Manchester, listening to Riot Grrrl bands and partying with feminists. Beth’s band, Gossip, they were a tiny band at the time, but big in Riot Grrrl circles. We all love their music and we all loved Beth. She was always awesome, funny and friendly. Fast Forward a few years and the TV show Skins came out using Standing in the way of Control as the theme tune and Gossip exploded. Like EXPLODED! Suddenly the flea pit venues were legit university buildings and festival main stages, but she never stopped being her awesome, funny and political self. About 5 years ago I bumped into her at Paris Fashion Week, she was talking to a friend of mine and she looked me square in the eyes and said ‘Where do I know you from?’, I was kind of taken aback as it had been so long and I couldn’t believe she recognised me. I mentioned a few of our mutual friends and we had a brief catch up. So cool, right? I won’t hear anything bad about this woman, she’s brilliant and even though it’s a million years since I saw her play in her bra and pants in flea-pit venues in Manchester, I still love her as much as I did back then.
Beth Ditto Clothing Collection
Anyway, it’s time to talk about Beth Ditto Clothing Collection. She has collaborated with brands in the past, but this is her first stand alone collection, the styling is done by Katie Grand (a long time friend of her, Beth posed naked on the first ever issue of LOVE magazine). The clothes are designed to be badass wearable clothes not just for a season, but for years.
“I wanted to make pieces to last years. Beyond trends, beyond chain stores. I wanted to create something all its own, something just for us, made with love and consideration. Made ethically in the USA as a small company with no big corporate input. Uncompromising, unapologetic, and timeless. Go-to pieces designed to last. A movement by us, for us.”
