5 Ways to get Inspired to Walk to Work

In honour of National Walk to Work Week, I thought it might be fun to do a post on how to get inspired to walk to work, or just walk a little more than you might normally!

1. Health

A brisk walk to work is a whole lot better for you than sitting on a tube, it gets your heart rate up and burns calories. Even if you go running or go to the gym a few times a week, it’s still good for your mind and body to walk each day. If you have a Garmin Vivofit or similar, I would highly recommend wearing it, as it is really satisfying seeing the distance you have walked at the end of the day and it does really spur you on!

2. Save Money

Has anyone else noticed how much money they spend on their Oyster card each week? I do Pay-as-you-go and I feel like every other day I am putting another £20 on my Oyster card. If you live in London and your journey is walkable each day, you could make a huge saving each week by walking to work!

3. It might not take much longer

The other day I waited 10 minutes for a bus and then it took 20 minutes to get to the end of the road. It’s a fairly long road, but I can walk it in 15 minutes. I realised I had spent £1.50 getting to my destination in double the time! Ridiculous right? Often by the time you wait for the bus and sit in rush hour traffic, you could have walked in a similar time. Calculate the exact amount of time you leave to get to work and then use google maps to figure out how long it takes to walk and you might find there is not much difference in time!

4. Enjoy listening to Music

I have always loved listening to music, but these days I don’t seem to get the chance to listen to as much of it as I used to. If your music selection on your phone is a little stale, take some time to freshen it up and listen to some cool beats as you pound the pavements!

5. No excuses

Stop making excuses for why you can’t walk to work! For instance, footwear is a big one, but there are plenty of smart and comfortable shoes on the market. Personally, I swear by Clarks, my loafers are so comfortable, yet still look stylish and smart. Similarly, if you are worried walking to work will ruin your make-up, it doesn’t take five minutes to freshen up your make-up in the bathroom and apply some perfume and jewellery. So why not give it a go!
