Three of the Best: Men’s Colognes

best mens colognes review

I don’t want to sound like I’m showing off, but my boyfriend always smells really good, in fact, even my mum has noticed. He doesn’t just stumble upon a scent he loves, we love spending our weekends browsing the fragrance halls of Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols. It is so much fun discovering new brands and new scents, we love trying them out and seeing how they develop. We never buy on the day, as you just never know how the scent will change on your skin and if it will last an hour or the whole day. If we love them after wearing them for the day, we go back to buy them the following week.

I thought I would do a blog post all about his three current favourite colognes, they are backed up by months of research and they are all colognes he wears on a regular basis. He never wears a cheaper scent to work compared to his personal time, as he enjoys wearing a good fragrance, even if it is just for himself. For a man, a good cologne is just as important as wearing a good suit and carrying a good pen. Similarly, he likes to smell good in the evenings and at the weekend, it’s important to him and something he enjoys.

These colognes are the best of the best. If you are looking for a new high-end cologne for your man, these three are some of the very best you will find on the market. Enjoy!

Jo Malone London Amber and Lavender mens colognes

Jo Malone London ‘Amber and Lavender’

It’s no secret that I am also a huge fan of Jo Malone London, in fact, I find it hard to pass a store without popping in. While he always comes in with me and loves smelling their new launches, he never felt there was anything here for him, until he tried their ‘Amber and Lavender‘ Cologne.

This cologne has a top note of Petitgrain, heart notes of french lavender and base notes of amber. It is fresh and masculine; on first sniff, you pick up on the fresh, citrus petitgrain,  then the lavender kicks in which is a little unusual but really beautiful. The amber is rich and warm.

This cologne is fresh, warm and comforting. The lavender is a really beautiful heart note, there is something really old fashioned about it, but also really modern. It’s beautiful and really unusual. It lasts all day long and it’s really a beautiful cologne. As with all Jo Malone London colognes, it smells fresh, natural and full bodied. He often wears this cologne when he is going to work and has important meetings.

Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche mens colognes

Annick Goutal ‘Ambre Fetiche’

We first discovered Annick Goutal in New York, we were walking down Bleecker Street with a cake in our hand (From Magnolia Bakery of course, such tourists!) when we decided to pop in as I had been recommended we visit by a friend. We instantly loved the beautiful store and while I set about exploring rose, wood and Oriental scents, he made his way over to the more masculine spicy, woody, amber and oud fragrances. We didn’t buy our favourites on the day, but we did get them when we came back to London. Since then he has been wearing Annick Goutal ‘Ambre Fetiche‘ loads. It is such a beautiful cologne.

It’s smoky, spicy, sweet and rich; It is a beautiful blend of Incense, Labdanum, Benzoin, Iris absolute, Vanilla, Geranium, Patchouli. It’s a beautiful scent which is rich with amber and oud, perfectly balanced with the spice and sweetness. He often wears this cologne in the evenings.

Creed Silver Mountain Water

Creed ‘Silver Mountain Water’

Creed ‘Silver Mountain Water‘ cologne is pure heaven. It’s the freshest of the three, it smells like crisp outdoors;  Green trees, mountain air, clear water and freshness. It is a blend of Citrus notes, Tea, Blackcurrant, Musk and Ambergris.

While it is fresh and clean, it still smells beautiful and sophisticated. The notes are perfectly balanced and really well considered. It lasts all day long, which is unusual for a cologne which smells so fresh and clean, it’s beautiful and refreshing. He generally wears this cologne in the Summer.
