How to: Dress like a modern day riot grrrl!

I spent my youth listening to the rants of Courtney love, the music of Babes in Toyland and Bikini Kill and reading homemade riot grrrl fanzines. It was zines that gave me my first taste of writing, Gwen Stefani that started me shopping for vintage (remember that blue dress in the ‘Don’t Speak video?) and Courtney that made me want bleach blonde hair.

I loved riot grrrl and it still influences me, I still love the music, the writing for fun, the new-wave girls (hi Tavi) and the style. It’s no coincidence I love a good collar, a Mary Jane shoe, messy bleached hair and I go nuts over Meadham Kirchhoff.

There are so many grunge/ riot grrrl style dresses on the high street. I see them in magazines and get excited, but when I go into the store they are a big old disappointment. It’s very rare I buy a new black and white collared dress, they just don’t compare to my vintage ones. There is always an exception to the rule though, and this dress by Lavish Alice is exactly what I want. Structured black fabric with structured collar and cuffs. It is a cute shape, a-line, not too full, not too narrow. It’s also a great length, on me it’s just above the knee, not too short, not too long. It’s perfect for the day time or clubs, worn with a denim jacket or white tights. This style of dress is always cool, but finding a good quality modern version is not always easy. I think this one, is perfect!lavish alice dress - riot girl - fashion for lunch blog

The original riot girl look was so damn cool, so I wouldn’t mess with it too much, you want to keep it fashionable but also keep it authentic and keep the spirit alive!

This Lavish Alice dress is the perfect mix of having great details, but also really fun to accessorise. I would team with it Mary Janes, they looked great in the 90’s and they are still perfect for the look. I have some super cute double strapped Mary Janes from Chanel, cute and retro, but the double strap adds a modern twist.

The sunglasses are Charlotte Olympia, they have a great retro, feminine feel, (very Babes in Toyland) but also modern and cool.

The necklace is by Momocreatura, back in the day small gold lockets were the look, I think this necklace is cool and fits with the outfit. It’s a brilliant design, and I think it gives the outfit a twist!

The barrette is an original Hole barrette from the 90s, these hair clips are super rare and it doesn’t see the light of day very often…It’s way too special! This would show all the other riot grrrls you know your stuff!

Penhaligon’s Cornubia is the perfect perfume for vintage glamour, it’s feminine, warm, sweet and sexy!

I added this heart shaped bag because it reminds me of a heart shaped box and it’s a great pop of colour! It’s by Minna Parikka, an amazing designer from Helsinki! Meadham Kirchhoff did something similar for Topshop last season, that was pretty cool too! If you have never heard of Minna Parikka, you should check her out…swoon!!

I sooo liked Courtney too before she tried to get “pretty”. The babydoll dresses were so awesome! I am jealous of the Hole barrette!

Loving this post and the riot grrrl style – Courtney is still dictating a lot of my wardrobe choices! It’s still fine to dress like you did (in a slightly more polished way) when you were 17 isn’t it?!?
