Van Cleef & Arpels ‘Bois Dore’
“I composed Bois Doré to be a wood that has fused with the luminosity of gold. I chose noble cedarwood and the hypnotic intensity of tonka bean, to which I added a touch of musk and vanilla to reinforce the character of this irresistibly delicious fragrance. I wanted you to be drawn to it as if it were a nugget of gold.”

I am a big fan of the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Collection. Each perfume is centred around a raw ingredient commonly used in fragrance; Rose, Vanilla, Amber, Oud and Patchouli to name just a few. Today, I want to chat about Bois Doré which is inspired by Tonka Bean. As a fragrance note, Tonka Bean is like a blend of vanilla, cream, cinnamon and almond, with a hint of earthiness. It is often used to add a hint of sweetness to the fragrance and often leaves a powdery trail. I’m always happy to find a hint of tonka bean in perfumes, as it blends beautifully with so many accords I love and gives the fragrance a much needed hit of, well, deliciousness!
Bois Doré is the kind of perfume I love, but I would never wear. For me personally, it’s a little too sweet, delicious and caramel-y, which just isn’t my style (Y’all know I like more unisex fragrances!). However, I LOVE that it exists because not enough luxury fragrance houses embrace the more delicious and gourmand side of perfumery. Some women, like me, love woodsy and smoky fragrances and others, like something a little sweeter, but that doesn’t mean she wants to scrimp on quality of elegance! Think of Marie Antoinette, she loved cake and all things wonderfully indulgent, but that doesn’t mean she’s gonna run down to Boots to buy the nearest sickly-sweet teenage perfume she can find, Hell no! A modern day Marie Antoinette would wear Bois Doré and bask in all it’s fabulous, frivolous, delicious fun! If you love luxury perfumes which are filled with notes of caramel, almond, vanilla, musk and cedarwood, then I urge you to head to head to your nearest Van Cleef & Arpels stockist for a spritz!
