I once went to an afternoon tea hosted by Terry de Gunzburg and I swear to god, I was staring at her the whole time like a crazy lady, yet as she moved around the room like a gracious host, I would subtly move away from her. Like a weird game of cat and mouse that she was unaware of. She was fabulous, but too fabulous to chat to, y’know, without making a fool of myself. So instead I spend two hours staring at her from a distance, like a creep. She was wearing a effervescent green suit to match the colour of her new fragrance and she was pure brilliance. What can I say, she’s an icon of the beauty industry; the former creative director of YSL Beauty, the creator of the iconic Touche Éclat (as well as many other staples) and the founder of the amazing line ‘By Terry’ as well as her own name fragrance collection. I knew I wouldn’t be able to have a casual chat with her!!
Review: Terry de Gunzburg ‘Délectation Splendide’
Anyway! Today, I want to chat about the latest Terry de Gunzburg fragrance; Delectation Splendid. Perhaps the reason Terry de Gunzburg is so amazing, is because she always does things differently. She’s not afraid to experiment and have some creative fun, she’s a true innovator and this is reflected in the sheer number of her creations which have become market leaders! As for Delectation Splendid, it is daring, beautiful, feminine and unexpected. When I first read through the fragrance notes, I had no idea how I felt about tobacco leaf being mixed with plum, praline and anise, but I kept my mind open and dove straight in! I’m so glad I did, because Delectation Splendid is such a delight! Firstly, this fragrance has a real soft, tactile tone to it. It’s sweet, sensual and powdery, with a kick of unexpected spice and smoke which steers it away from the gourmand and towards the exotic and Oriental. The spicy ginger and pepper mixes with the slightly medicinal anise and tobacco leaf. The heart by comparison is rich and sweet with velvety Moroccan rose, praline, tonka bean, milky almond and dark plum. As for the base, it’s a wonderfully warm and sensual mix of earthy patchouli, musk, amber, vanilla and cinnamon. The spices at the top of the fragrance never quite dissipate, so you are left with a creamy, sweet, spicy, powdery trail. It’s softer than you might expect, but every bit as sensual and luxurious as you would hope for! This one, needs to be experienced!
