Ten Springtime Fragrances
As I write this, I can literally hear the wind whistling through the cracks and corners of my house. It’s freeeeeezing right now, in fact, I actually slept badly because it was so cold. It might seem a little ridiculous that I am writing a post about Spring time fragrances, but I went outside yesterday (bundled up under a million layers of wool) and I saw signs of life on the trees and in the flowerbeds. It’s time to think about putting away the heavy ouds and woods which are comforting and cocooning, and consider something a little zestier and uplifting for the months ahead.
Jo Malone London ‘Lime Basil Mandarin’
This is a classic fragrance I bring out every single year, it’s the ultimate citrus, springtime fragrance. Jo Malone London Lime Basil Mandarin is bursting full of ripe, zingy limes and juicy, tangy mandarins. Perfectly balanced with green notes of herby, peppery basil. It’s uplifting, fresh and citrus-y, but it’s also elegant and distinctive. So many brands have tried to recreate this fragrance, but it’s never, ever the same, Jo Malone London Lime Basil Mandarin is special. Also, it’s worth pointing out that unlike most citrus fragrances, this perfume has real staying power and will last throughout the day.
Guerlain ‘Aqua Allegoria Bergamotte Calabria’
I’m such a huge, huge fan of Guerlain and their fragrance Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria is perfume for spring. It’s filled with notes of bergamot, petitgrain, cardamom, ginger, woods and musk. It’s fresh and uplifting with citrus, green florals and a touch of smoke and spice, it makes me think of airy Parisian gardens; clean, manicured and wonderfully elegant! It doesn’t last all day long, more like half the day, but it’s totally worth reapplying, it’s a really beautiful perfume!
Parfums de Marly ‘Royal Essence’
I love rich, floral perfumes which have a vintage vibe to them, which is probably why I am so obsessed with Parfums de Marly Royal Essence. It is rich with rose, peony and lily of the valley, with a heart of rhubarb, bergamot, lychee and nutmeg. The base is vanilla, white musk and cashmere. It’s wonderfully feminine and pretty, but it has a dusty pink powdery feel to it which makes me think of Marie Antoinette, Laduree cream teas, pink tea roses and old hollywood film stars having illicit affairs. It’s beautiful and romantic, but it has a hint of edge to it,perhaps it’s the spicy nutmeg and the tart rhubarb, but it has an edge to it, which gives it a modern feel.
Zadig & Voltaire ‘This is Her!’
This little beauty was released last year and whilst all winter I was obsessed with the men’s version ‘This is Him!‘ (Technically it’s for men, but it’s fairly unisex, so if you are a girl like me who likes fragrances which have gender neutral feel and plenty of black pepper, check this one out). However, now that we are moving into spring, I’m all about the Zadig & Voltaire This is Her! It’s filled with notes of creamy chestnut, vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine and amber. Creamy and delicious without being too sweet and gourmand.
Elie Saab ‘Le Parfum Resort Collection’
If you like your fragrances sweet, springy and fruity-floral, then I have something really specially for you from Elie Saab! Make no mistake, this isn’t your average fruity-floral though, it contains notes of fig, orange blossom, jasmine and frangipani, all quite unusual notes for this style of perfume, the fig is green, milky and sweet and the frangipani is downright delicious and if you ask me, and underused floral in perfumery. Whilst it’s not my usual style of perfume, Elie Saab Le Parfum Resort Collection is too good to resist!
Shay & Blue ‘Dandelion Fig’
I often share fragrances with my boyfriend; he isn’t afraid of florals and I’m not afraid of darker and woodier notes. Our latest ‘sharing’ fragrance is Shay & Blue Dandelion Fig and it’s got us both all ‘heart-in-the-eyes-emoji’ over it. It’s wonderfully green with milky figs and dandelion leaves, a healthy dose of warm woods and cool aquatic notes. It’s smells like a clearing in a woodland, with ripe figs and blackberries on trees, foliage underfoot and a clear stream nearby. It’s beautiful for spring, especially if you are looking for something a little more green and woodsy!
Miller Harris ‘Rose Silence’
There are two types of rose perfumes lovers, the purists and the Garlands, in case you haven’t heard these terms before, it’s because I have made them up myself, basically those who like rose perfumes straight up, and those who like rose blended with other florals like peonies, jasmine and orange blossom. Personally, I’m a bit of a purist, I love rose fragrances which are dominant with rose and any other notes are just there to support and add depth, but essentially, it’s all about the rose! Rose can be quite a heavy and sometimes feel a little to rich and velvety for spring, so something like Miller Harris Rose Silence is perfect for the purists like me, as it has all the richness and clarity of a beautiful rose perfume, but it also has a softness and a translucency to it which makes it appropriate for Spring. In short. If you love rose perfumes, then you will love this for spring!
DKNY ‘Woman’ Limited Edition
Every Spring / Summer, DKNY release two limited edition fragrances, one for men, one for women. They capture the spirit of summer in the city and this year they have taken inspiration from the artists and creators who make NYC the cultural hub that it is. The womens’ fragrance is filled with notes of bergamot, pink pomelo, ginger, lychee, jasmine, white tea and musk at the base. It’s a delicate and airy fruity floral with unexpected notes of lychee and ginger. Really pretty and perfect for ladies in their teens and twenties.
Neom ‘Energy Burst’
I am a long-time fan of Neom Organics home frangrances and Sleep Spray, but it is only recently they have introduced a 100% Natural Eau de Parfum into the collection. Neom Enegry Burst blends sixteen essential oils to create a zesty, fresh, natural perfume which not only scents your skin and clothes, but it also gives you a burst of Enegy when spritz. It contains notes of grapefruit, lemon and herby rosemary, it’s uplifting for the soul and delightful as a perfume. Perfect if you are still feeling sluggish from winter!
Kenzo ‘Flower By Kenzo’
An iconic fragrance and always a Spring delight! Kenzo Flower By Kenzo is filled with notes of rose, violet, hawthorn, vanilla and lots of white musk. Delicate, pretty, feminine and perfect for younger ladies. This was a favourite of mine when I was growing up and whilst it’s a little young for me now, it always brings back memories of summer holidays, fresh laundry, breezy beaches and fresh flowers. Such a lovely perfume!
Penhaligon’s ‘Savoy Steam’
Finally, Penhaligon’s Savoy Steam is the latest release from one of my most treasured perfumery brands. It’s filled with notes of Rosemary oil, pink pepper, rose, germanium, Incense and resins. It is inspired by hammam and traditional baths; steam, incense, herbs and florals. I’m always a huge fan of Penhaligon’s fragrances and this is a real winner as far as I’m concerned, it feels very modern-traditional, combining the Penhaligon’s tradition in grooming
